We celebrate World Prematurity Day on November 17th. It is a day where we celebrate all the wonderful children who were born earlier than planned. It is important both on this day and every other day!
Baby clothes in size 44 for my girls
20 years ago in a few days: on November 20th, we ourselves needed baby clothes in the smallest sizes, because that's when our twin girls were born - 5 weeks before their due date.
We had a feeling that they would probably come a little early, twins often do – yes, I almost crossed my fingers for that, because it was quite heavy to carry two! It was my second pregnancy and it was completely different from my first, 3½ years earlier. I had never really given it a thought that I could have twins, because there are no twins in either my husband's or my family.
I got a surprise.
As a second-time mother, I felt quite relaxed and experienced, so I went to the midwife alone – that changed abruptly when baby no. 2 was discovered! Calling my husband and telling him that we were having twins was also a wild experience! The day the girls were born, life did another somersault, a good somersault: the girls were so small and so fine, not least compared to their big brother, who at birth was 57 cm long and weighed 3950 grams – he skipped all sizes under 62!
At first the girls were doing well and I felt like a superhero, but after three days they started losing weight and had to be fed through a feeding tube. One of them dropped below 2kg and the superhero feeling I had had disappeared and was replaced by worry. This resulted in ten days in hospital which felt like forever, but luckily things turned around and the girls were ready to go home.
The first time at home is somewhat hazy in my memory – it was all about getting a handle on food, sleep and trying to find a rhythm in the chaos. A feeling that can be recurring in a family with children… 😉
Clothes for premature babies
At that time, all the clothes we had ready were way too big for our girls, and in general the selection of clothes for small premature babies was extremely limited. That's why it felt obvious to design delicious MarMar Copenhagen clothes in very small sizes. First, we introduced our popular modal quality in organic GOTS-certified cotton and Lenzing Tencel, and made solid-colored, classic and usable styles from size 44, which are easy to get on and off, even for the very little ones.
Since then, our newborn collection has expanded and now also includes fine prints, delicate pointelle all the way down to size 44 and all in good, soft qualities.
On Neonatal
Over the past few years, we at MarMar Copenhagen have donated clothes to neonatal units throughout Denmark, and it is a great joy to be able to give a helping hand to families in need.
Welcome to the world to all newborns, and Happy Premature Birth Day to all!
Warmest regards,
Marlene, Owner and Creative Director at MarMar Copenhagen
